Networking
with business
At the annual meeting of the Working Group on Development
Policy of German Industry (AGE) in November 2004, exposure
and dialogue programmes were presented as a model for
the future of cooperation between business and development
policy in the personnel sector (Personnel Development
Partnerships (PDPs)).
Development partnerships
– cooperation between development organisations
and businesses in the personnel sector
One result of the participation of Mr. Hans Reckers,
Chairman of the Board of the Deutsche Bundesbank (German
Federal Bank), in the exposure and dialogue programme
“Struggling for Self-Reliance” in January
2000 in Bangladesh is his involvement in the declaration
issued by the Central Committee of German Catholics: “International
Financial Markets – Justice needs rules”,
which was published in 2003.
The encounter with poor borrowers in Bangladesh in January
2000, caused the former Prime Minister of Baden Württemberg,
Erwin Teufel, to initiate an exhibition under the title
“Baden-Württemberg: Economic progress and global
social responsibility”. On the occasion of the 50th
anniversary of the founding of the state of Baden-Württemberg
in 2002, businesses and organisations that are involved
in sustainable cooperation in developing countries presented
themselves under the title “Development has got
a face”.

in supra-regional daily newspapers, magazines, radio and
television programmes
„Ein Banker in Bolivien“ (A Banker
in Bolivia, 2001)
A film by Peter Wingert, a journalist from the German
television station SWR, who recorded his experiences as
a participant in the exposure and dialogue programme with
words and pictures. The film mainly shows Dr. Christoph
Sigrist (from the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau
– KfW) sharing the life of an Aymara family in the
highlands of Bolivia. What happens to the Aymara hosts
and the visitor from Germany can be seen in this film.
(25 min.) This fim is only available in German language.
„Giving Women Credit –
Self-help in Bangladesh„ (1997)
The changes experienced by Grameen Bank borrowers (Hawa
and Saleha) as they move from helplessness to independence
are shown. What happens when women run their own businesses,
what strategies do they choose and what are their goals?
The focus is on making a direct comparison. (40 min.)
„Stronger than fate –
Bottom-up development co-operation in Bangladesh“
(1991)
The life story of Nurjahan, a poor Grameen Bank borrower.
In hours of conversation Nurjahan told the author, Luise
Crome, about her life and the importance of the loan for
her fight against poverty; these conversations were then
made into a film. (30 min.)

Elaboration
and implementation of participatory research projects
Savings and credit institutions were surveyed
in a research project carried out by the Research Group
on the Universal Tasks of the Church of the German Bishops’
Conference on the basis of case studies and dialogue workshops
that were elaborated by the EDP Association with micro-finance
institutions in Bangladesh, the Dominican Republic, India
and the Philippines.

Capacity
building for One World solidarity initiatives
„”Can solidarity be globalised?”
– that is the question that 14 workers from the
Catholic University Mission, the Catholic charity Misereor
and from Justice and Peace sought to answer in the exposure
and dialogue programme in Guatemala in 2003. The experiences
of the EDP and the expert, topical exchange with local
experts help the staff to put an accent on development
policy when teaching of German and foreign students, e.g.
when preparing and providing back-up support for foreign
interns.
Another follow-up step in this context is an educational
programme based on development policy and universal church
teachings, which was held in July/August 2006. German
and Guatamalan students stayed with small farmers in Guatamala
and learned about their ways and joined in their work.
This experience and a short internship afterwards at the
charity Caritas in El Quiché served to help them
find their personal and professional direction. “What
is development for me?” – Taking this guiding
question as a starting point, the encounters between young
people of both countries were meant to deepen the mutual
understanding of social and personal situations. Since
the encounter project, which was supported by the scholarship
association Proyecto Lja´tz and advised by EDP Association
also involved potential future decision-makers from Guatemala
itself, all the co-operation partners are hopeful that
it will have an effect on the pro-poor training of elites,
which is needed equally in both Guatemala and Germany.
